Thanks John, I think it is easy to confuse what defines a "Arabic/Persian" inspired fantasy if you have never read one. The Ramayana was eastern inspired, just not middle eastern, and certainly not a "Arabian Nights" type fantasy.
While I viewed Ramayana as an important read, it never struck me enough to want to re-read it, or a retelling of it. All Arabian fantasy tales were often called "Arabian Nights" when translated into English, regardless of whether they appeared in The Book of One Thousand and One Nights, in any version, and a number of tales are known in Europe as "Arabian Nights" Arabian fantasy book existing in no Arabic manuscript.
